Sustainability management studies not only include existing studies on ethics management, "right" management and transparency management, but also encompass studies on corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainability management.

Amidst a growing global demand for transparency and sustainability of an enterprise, the Institute for Industrial Policy Studies (IPS) set up the Center for Sustainability Management (CSM) in 2001 to identify the current status of sustainability management in Korea as well as to implement and expand sustainability management in enterprises. The CSM conducts evaluation of enterprises and the government and provides policy advice at business and government-level.

The CSM is committed to 1) presenting direction for sustainability management defined through the consensus of business stakeholders, 2) developing know-how in sustainability management, and 3) promoting the expansion of sustainability management.

Sustainability management is
a business strategy implemented by a company to realize its aspiration of growing into a "sustainable corporation," and the company may strategically leverage social and environmental responsibilities to build competitive advantage and to fulfill its economic responsibility to ultimately become an ongoing concern.
